Chief Joseph
led his people (the Nez Perce Indians) in a brilliant retreat from the United States Army.
Chief Joseph was only trying to lead his people to Canada, where they could
continue to live in peace in the ways that they had always lived. He led his band of men, women, children, and elders more than 1,000 miles.
But the United States Army chased them, and caught them only 40 miles from
the Canadian border.

Chief Joseph surrendered, the US Army killed most of the herd. But those horses that survived became known as the Appaloosa. |
