Recognizing Denominators
Recognizing Numerators and Denominators
Parts of a Group

Jack and Jill are about to split a pizza. Their friend Sam comes. What fraction will Jack and Jill eat altogether?

This program introduces fraction concepts, starting with denominators.

A hint is given if the student chooses incorrectly.

Color scheme hints are also given after an incorrect try.

Next, numerators are taught.

These are introduced as parts of a whole.

Again, hints are given if the student answers incorrectly.

Finally, I teach how to calculate parts of a group.

I developed this unique method after working with children in a classroom., Many 4th graders had difficulty with the traditional "first divide, then multiply" method.
Some students could not remember the sequence, or what numbers to divide and multiply.

After watching students, I found that this method of illustration helped even the struggling students achieve success.

First draw and shade a fraction circle that matches the problem.

Draw sticks to match the problem.
I suggest grouping in groups of five for easier and more accurate counting.

Divide the sticks by a cross out and place method.

When all sticks are place, count those in the shaded fraction circle.

It is now easier for children to understand the "divide then multiply" method.

Each of the word problems is presented in a movie.
If you have the Shockwave Flash player, you may click "Continue" to view the movie.

Scores are awarded throughout the program.
At this stage of the program, award movies are shown after successfully completing each problem.
Movies and background colors are coordinated with the problem that has been completed.

The points for each problem increase as the student moves to more difficult levels of the program.
Points are lost for incorrect entries, but the student never "goes in the hole."

When a student completes a set of questions, he or she may enter the Hall of Fame.
The top ten scores are displayed.

Additional information about this program is included on the Fraction Package page.
You will need to go to the Programs page and choose Fraction Package.

You must go through the programs page, because of how my shopping cart has been programmed.
