It is busy
at the North Pole.
Santa took a count of his reindeer and his elves.
He counted 32 heads and 80 legs.
How many elves
are there?
And how many reindeer are there?
|
|
Bonus question:
How many cookies
should Ms. Claus bake?
Explain your answer.
|
|
The solution
Each
reindeer has 4 legs, and each elf has 2 legs,
and they all have 1 head.
You
can try 16 reindeer and 16 elves, (16 + 16 = 32 heads)
then see how many legs that would be.
16
x 4 = 66 reindeer legs and 16 x 2 = 32 elf legs
66 + 32 = 98 legs
This solution is wrong.
If
you keep experimenting, you will discover
that there are 8 reindeer and 24 elves.
8
+ 24 = 32 heads (correct)
8 x 4 = 32 reindeer legs and 24 x 2 = 48 elf legs
32 + 48 = 80 legs
Correct.
