Maple Tree Polynomial Graphing

I wrote this program while tutoring a high school student in advanced math.

I wanted a different visual presentation of polynomial graphs than the student's graphing calculator provided.

As I worked with my own program, I began to develop an intuitive understanding of the graphs of polynomial equations.

This program requires that a polynomial equation be written in standard form.
This can be accomplished with algebraic manipulations, if necessary.

Coefficients of an equation up to the 5th degree, and a constant, may be entered in the text boxes.

Up to 3 characters (including negative signs and decimal points) may be entered.
I placed this limitation to avoid "overflow" of very large y values that could cause the program to crash.

When "Draw Graph" is clicked, the graph is drawn,
and more program features appear.

A horizontal slider automatically shows the x and y values for x = 0.

The slider may be moved in increments of .01 to change the x value and view the corresponding y value of the equation.

Any x value may also be typed to obtain a calculation of y.

Also, the cursor may be held over any point on the grid to view an approximate value of x and y on the status bar.

A different scale may be chosen, if needed.

A different section of the curve may be viewed by right clicking and dragging.

The edit menu allows erasing the last equation drawn, or clearing the entire graph.

The File menu includes save and print options.

Many interface choices allow for interesting color combinations, which can help in graphing multiple equations or artistic/mathematical play.

A unique "color picker", written by Richard Grant, is provided for choosing custom point colors.

After writing the program, I "played" with some equations and discovered some interesting projects.

A separate page of activities is provided.

I invite users to send me activities that they might discover (see my email contact information at the bottom of this page).
