Equivalent
Fractions (step by step)
First
the student must make a decision whether to multiply or
divide to achieve the desired result. A picture representation
of each equivalent fraction pair is shown.
The
student CANNOT proceed to the next step until this decision
is made correctly.
Next
a mathematical calculation must be made.
Again,
the student CANNOT proceed to the next step until this decision
is made correctly.
Very
specific help is given if the student needs it.
Finally,
the student enters the correct numerator, but only after completing
the steps to calculate it.
I
experienced much frustration in the classroom when students
performed pencil and paper steps out of order, or skipped
steps (reaching inaccurate results). I could guide one or
two student at a time, but I could not watch all students
in a classroom simultaneously.
I wrote this program so that students may work independently,
being required to perform all steps in the proper order.
A reward
movie is played throughout the program,
after completing a conversion correctly.
This example
is one of many reward movies
(you might need to refresh this page to see the animation).
When the
student is ready to practice mentally calculating equivalent
fractions, the second component of the program gives practice
where the student only enters the numerator for the particular
calculation.
No illustrations
are provided, but the background colors still give intuitive
hints.
Equivalent
Fractions (without steps)
Reduce
to Lowest Terms (step by step)
The third
component of the program guides the student through the steps
to reduce fractions to lowest terms.
Illustrations
and color hints are provided to help give students an intuitive
understanding of fractions in their lowest terms.
First
the greatest common factor (GCF) of the numerator and denominator
must be determined.
Help is
given if necessary.
The
visual presentation is expanded, and the student enters the
correct numerator and denominator.
Very
specific help is given when needed.
Reduce
to Lowest Terms (without steps)
The
fourth component of the program allows the student to practice
reducing fractions to lowest terms mentally, without performing
each step.
No
illustrations are provided, but the background colors still
give intuitive hints.
Improper
Fractions to Mixed Numbers (step by step)
The
fifth component of the program guides the student through
the steps involved in converting improper fractions to mixed
numbers.
Illustrations
and colors are included to help
development of intuitive understanding.
Throughout
the program, the student must complete a step correctly before
advancing to the next. A teacher may confidently let the student
work independently, knowing that the steps must be worked
correctly, in order, and ample help is given along the way.
Specific
help is given with each step, if needed.
The
visual presentation is expanded for the next step.
If
necessary (after incorrect entries), more help is given.
Answers
must be reduced to lowest terms, (if necessary).
Incorrect
entries result in additional help.
Improper
Fractions to Mixed Numbers (without steps)
The
sixth component of the equivalent fractions program allows
the student
to practice mentally converting to mixed numbers, without
going through all the previous steps.
Answers
must still be converted to lowest terms if necessary.
Of
course, hints are given when needed.
Scores
are awarded throughout the program.
At this stage of the program, award movies are shown after
successfully completing each problem.
Movies and background colors are coordinated with the problem
that has been completed.
The
points for each problem increase as the student moves to
more difficult levels of the program.
Points are lost for incorrect entries, but the student never
"goes in the hole."
When
a student completes a set of problems, he or she may enter
the Hall of Fame.
The top ten scores are displayed.
